Fine Arts Support in Haldane

At the October 20, 2009 Board of Education Workshop President Dave Merandy raised the topic of support for the Fine Arts in Haldane. The issue triggered energetic discussion with suggestions, which included creating a new Booster Club, modifying or adding to an existing group, and advocating for more and richer Arts education opportunities.

A preliminary meeting with Haldane School Arts faculty, administration, parents, students and interested community members will launch the conversation about the direction of Arts education, funding, advocacy and support (Meeting date now set for November 16, 2009 at 3:30 pm in the Fireplace Room).

Please check back here or at the Haldane School website for updates, and join the discussion about the direction of Fine Arts education in Haldane.

I was at the meeting representing the PTA. The PTA was happy to see that there was such interest in supporting the Arts. I wanted to make certain that the community knew that there were already two organizations among whose mandates are support of the Art education- the Haldane PTA and the Haldane School Foundation.

While all comers are welcome, I fear that creating yet another fundraising organization to support the Arts might dilute an already overtaxed pool of supporters in our generous, but small community. Our community has already been wonderfully generous to both of these entities.

The PTA would love to help with the creation of an Arts Committee that would help to take full advantage of the system already in place. We invite those interested in serving on such a committee to contact us.

We are also hoping to grow participation in the national Reflections program, which gives our kids a forum for competing on a national level in the disciplines of Dance, Film, Literature, Musical Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. This year's deadline for submission is December 9.

Podcast for the meeting is now up on ITunes, and, as usual, Damian McDonald has thoughtfully provided chapters so that you can skip right to the Fine arts discussion. It is definitely worth a listen!

I'm part of a group of artist-parents who have been in discussion with Garrison Art Center and Jean Cendali about possible collaboration. While we are still in the planning phase, we have several volunteers willing to hold workshops in the elementary art classrooms.

The Fine Arts support in Haldane discussion will also continue at the next Board of Education meeting on November 3, Election Day. Please encourage anyone interested in the Arts to attend the meeting and join the discussion!
